Tanya Evans-Lawes
An experienced hand knitter who has built her design and machine knitting skills on a strong foundation of stitch and fibre knowledge. During a work placement year Tanya designed and wrote a small collection of hand knitting patterns, helped develop a British wool yarn and produced a large number of swatches. In her second year she was chosen to represent the University at Spin Expo, Shanghai. In final year she was awarded a bursary from the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters, and was shortlisted for the sustainability award at Fashanne. Her final major project explores how traditional hand knitting skills could influence a more sustainable approach to knitwear design and production. She has also developed ways to re-purpose existing knitwear into new and exciting garments using methods inspired by traditional hand techniques. Tanya plans to further extend her Stoll and Shima skills and continue to design durable, long lasting garments that can be manufactured here in the UK.
