Artist Deborah Roberts explains that through art she is able to "create a more expansive and inclusive view of the Black cultural experience”. My project, titled 'A Seat At The Table' is inspired by this idea and explores my take on the beauty of Black identity through textiles and further influenced by Afrofuturism and Afrosurrealism - both themes that draw on the idea of reimagining the black identity in a new and positive light. Specialising in embroidery, I have a particular interest and proficiency in using the Multihead, hand embellishment and digital print – all of which I use to create contemporary and inspired designs for a fashion application. My aim as a designer is to unapologetically express my identity and culture within my practice. My degree has enabled me to do so and hone in on my techniques ready for starting a career. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in the fashion industry working in textiles - where I can continue to portray the black identity.
