My final year project took "The Saga of the Volsungs", a Medieval piece of Icelandic literature, as inspiration for a television series adaptation. This project is a historical fantasy and in order to find my own niche within this well-established genre, I re-centred the narrative around three key female figures and incorporated aspects of the Icelandic landscape into my designs. This project is emblematic of everything about costume which captures my interest, specifically the intersection of history and fantasy and historical construction techniques. The research process for historically inspired projects really captures my imagination- from interpreting archaic art to reconstructing ancient world views, research analysis is my greatest strength as a designer and maker. In the future, I plan to undertake a Masters in Ancient History and combine this knowledge with my costume training, hoping to find a career in museum work.
