My project 'Surface' includes a collection of bells that are inspired by textured surfaces found in nature, such as lichen, rust and decay. Each bell is influenced by Japanese Buddhist temple bells which signify peace, joy and hop, which is something I wanted to portray within my collection. I adapted the texture and colour palette on my pieces to compliment environments that have been influenced by Wabi Sabi, which includes raw natural materials, textures and imperfections. Each one of my bells is made in a press mould, following with hand made handles. Throughout the collection I have used a range of clays varying in texture. This is an important step in my process as I am interested in how the glaze can be manipulated through colour or texture depending on the clay type.
