The notion that engagements such as embroidery, crochet and knitting are all extensions of the female figure is a well-versed concept that has been around for decades. Having developed a deep interest in the traditional and contemporary status of textiles from early 19th century to present day, my final BA collection explores the associations between textiles and domesticity, specifically how this tied to the female identity. Focusing on hand craft methods such as crochet as well as taking influence from materials that function within the domestic realm (lace curtains, tea towels, tablecloths), my project aims to relocate these fabrics and techniques into the conversation of fashion and art. 'That for our fathers, This for us' hopes to encourage the viewer to consider their own understanding of objects in relation to materials and the associations they hold to them.
