With the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement, this has been my way of expressing myself and taking a stance through embracing and retaining the cultural history of those who came before me. For my final year project I wanted to research the history of madras originating in Chennai, India. The migration of this fabric from India, to Africa and then to the Caribbean through trade interested me as each community had their own interpretation and identity surrounding madras. I have chosen to express the distortion of the check inspired by the dynamic energy and vibrant festivals it is used for in the Caribbean. The knitted outfits in my collection will be created using zero waste techniques and inspired by the movement and dancing of my Great Aunts wearing the traditional Dominican Dresses to Notting Hill Carnival.
